Portugal, June 2008, truck drivers strike

At the midnight of the 9th of June [2008] initiated in Portugal an illegal truck drivers and owners strike, with the declared objective of obtaining a reduction in the oil prices (as happened last week with the fishermen). From the beginning the truck drivers and truck owners took a distance from ANTRAM (the association of the sector of road transportations) because they didn’t feel represented…
From the first night there were flying pickets in almost every Portuguese road usually used by truck drivers. The people in the pickets blockaded the roads and highways with their own bodies as soon as they saw some truck approaching. This was to reveal itself to be tragic, with one man ending up dead, run over by a truck driver who wasn’t on strike. Some transportations and supermarket companies were openly defying the strike, explicitly ordering their drivers to not stop and sending groups of trucks escorted by police cars, with fear of attacks. But this didn’t turn out as expected.
On the second night of the strike dozens of trucks who belonged to or who were working for specific companies were attacked with stones while travelling, in very different parts of the country (Cantanhede, Figueira da Foz and at least in different parts of three highways). Dozens of winscreens were broken. At various places where non-striking truck drivers were parked several acts of sabotage occurred, such as slashed tires and battery and brake cables cut. At least twelve “non-striking trucks” parked in different parts of the country were attacked with fire and burnt down. A Judiciary Police source says dozens of these trucks were burnt down. The vandalism and sabotage went on the following night. Trucks that hours before were working escorted by riot police vehicles, hours later appeared burnt down, also with cables cut.
In the supermarkets there was almost no food, and lines of shelves were simply empty. Nothing to sell, what a beautiful vision. The gas stations all over Portugal didn’t have any oil or gas. The Lisbon airport had only enough fuel for military and emergency planes. Thousands of cops on the roads, no blockade would be permitted. The journalists asked for the government to be harder with the repression, that the country was in the hands of the truck drivers, and that the state of emergency be declared. The following day some journalists who wanted to do a live coverage of an assembly of workers nearby had some trouble: the camera cables were cut by anonymous hands. Anonymous in the middle of dozens of truck drivers.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, an ad-hoc “representative commission” that was constituted by some truck drivers and owners reached an agreement with the government, and it didn’t involve a reduction in oil prices. The same old story: end of strike, everyone back to work. The truck drivers on many flying pickets didn’t want to end the strike, at least not until the reduction in the oil prices. The deals were good, but for the big truck owners. The truck drivers didn’t feel represented by this ad-hoc commission, as happened also with ANTRAM; but they thought everyone else fell. Representation fucks you in mysterious ways.

In Spain, the truck drivers were also on strike, they made flying pickets across the whole country, and stopped thousands of trucks, including some Portuguese ones.
Some of the trucks whose drivers didn´t stop were attacked with stones, sabotaged or burned. The Spanish truck drivers also asked for the reduction of oil prices.
In Valença, some fishermen and boat owners blockaded a bridge with barricades and burning tires, in solidarity with the truck drivers.
A few days after the beginning of the strike, the riot cops started to attack the flying pickets, removing the trucks and identifying drivers; at least 90 people were arrested and a man was sentenced to 8 months in prison, accused of attacking a cop.
The consequences of the strike were similar to the Portuguese ones, the supermarkets were empty and thousands of trucks had to been escorted by the riot police.
In Almeria 4000 farmers clashed with the police, while they were doing a demo against the escalation of oil prices, al least 20 people got hurt.

ON THE PRISONER MOVEMENT AND THE HUNGER STRIKE ISSUE

Not many words are needed to describe the conditions that reign inside prisons. One word would fit: Dahaou.

Crushing incarcerations, equally exterminative penalties (the only ones really paying for the judge's racket scandal coming to light are the inmates), prolonged captivity through un unmeasured use of disciplinary charges, minimum or zero medical supplies (with the exception of constant drug pills dispensation, to produce Pavlov's dogs), overcrowding of the prisons (Concerning just the Dahaou of Ioannina where I am kept, more than 200 prisoners live in a prison built to "house" 80 persons. Prisoners are packed like sardines in a can, even in the corridors!).

This overcrowding could end with a few simple ways:

1) Reduction of pre-trial imprisonment
2) End of captivity of the vindictive disciplinary charges
3) Abolishion of the 4/5 of time rule for the drug cases (in Greece all drug addict prisoners are labeled as dealers, leading to the "dealers" being more than the users...)

Inside these miserable conditions we have millions of reasons to revolt, and none to remain passive. With full consciousness that whatever measures they take to disburden the prisoners are nothing more than painkillers, since for as long as this authoritarian/class society stands, the miserableness of prison will stand by it. I join forces with the prisoners struggle, as I did in solidarity with them, while I was outside the prison bars.

On the other hand, I can't keep to my self my disagreement on the weapon of hunger strike, that was suggested, and I regard as useful to express this disagreement open and in public. I regard as by NO means necessary to eliminate ourselves and move into actions that only waste our forces, the same time that there are still many other ways to resist and fight (as much for the inmates as for the out of prison bars solidarious). Our health, our bodies and our minds should be kept fit and strong our ENTIRE lives, and not surrender in a wilful decay.
Our clash with the society that gives birth to the prison misery should continue until we finally become food for the worms, and for this reason our full physical and mental health should be safeguarded as the apple of our eye.
Maybe a hunger strike will bring some short term positive results (draw some support, sensitizing), but in a long term it acts only as a deleterious effect. It's simply one step forward and two steps aback.

Moreover, it creates fighters of many levels. The same time that 50-100 persons in a self-sacrifice spirit risk their physical and mental health, thousands of other inmates will eat typically their "zwan" meat.

I consider more useful the decision making through collective processes, so that every means of struggle we use must concern EVERY prisoner in struggle.

By no means do I wish to break apart the unity that prevails among prisoners. This text was written aiming only to make clear my stance on the issue of the hunger strike (an issue the radical movement deals with for many years now) and not to criticise the comrades that selected this means. All I do is striving for the sportiness of words and actions I strived before my imprisonment, and nothing more than that.
It is obvious that I will put all my efforts in the prisoners fight for Dignity.

About a Hungerstrike

Prison is a plague that society does everything to conceal with remarkable zeal, yet prisons still stand. It’s common to be moved to tears by some movie about prisoners at the cinema yet we manage to keep our eyes shut in the face of a prison imposing its shadow just a step ahead of us. No one talks about it, but we all respond to the iron hand of the law in some way as the safe circulation of commodities and profit for the bosses demands stricter and stricter rules and punishment. Things are getting harder, pushing many to some kind of delinquency. At the same time, not only does all deviant behaviour get criminalised but the whole of everyday life is being transformed into an open prison with its own regulations, guards and outrageous penalties, sterile and poor, where more boredom is the only thing to be expected. The modern State is a police State. Not only can we all end up in prison, in a way we are already there.
With the prison population growing steadily along with the profits for those involved in this prolific enterprise, more and more people will be subjected to even shorter chains. Tortured with every modern method, ensuring they and their own will suffer much more than the harm they might have caused. Just like most of us outside, they survive. Some go crazy. Some fight back. Sometimes they rebel.
In Greece, last year’s mutinies following the beating of the anarchist prisoner G. Dimitrakis lead to many days of riots, prisons set on fire, and the riot cops beating their way in through a suffocating fog of tear gas. The prisoners survived. They even got stronger. Learned to fight together. Outside the prisons anarchists and revolutionaries spread information, organized gatherings, prison demonstrations, direct action, sometimes even set police stations on fire. Prisons aren’t unknown to whoever engages in a fight against this rotten establishment.
After mass transfers, beatings, torture, the prisoners in Greece haven’t ceased to fight. On November 3, after they warned the authorities to take some measures to improve prison conditions, decrease detention years and put an end to prison guard violence, disciplinary charges, pre-trial imprisonment (1/3 of all prisoners are still awaiting trial) and juvenile prisons, the largest collective hunger strike was launched. By now, more than 2.000 out of 13.000 prisoners are on hunger strike, while several thousand more are boycotting prison meals, around all of the 21 prisons of the country. The Greek government and mass-media choose not to bother themselves with the prisoners, expecting them to get exhausted soon.
Not unlike prisons, this society of commodities is designed to isolate us, in order to render us fearful obedient tools of the economy, unaware of our power and possibilities.
However, there are people that continue to fight. Like the prisoners of La Mesa, Tijuana (Mexico), that burnt down a prison after prison guards killed a 17 year old inmate. Like those prisoners in Texas that sabotaged the prison’s CCTV cameras, like the prisoners in detention centres in France and Turkey, like the life prisoners in Italy that are organizing a collective hunger strike for December 2008.
Like life itself, the history of prison is the history of rebellion, the struggle to stay alive, to keep one’s dignity in the face of a project of slow death. Many men and women who have fought for a society without exploitation and repression have known the inside of a prison cell. Prison mutinies have left their sign in wrecked prison walls as hearts beat faster with joy, strangers becoming comrades in a night where the impossible became tangible.
Countless prisoners have given their lives, creating a living memory incarnated in the struggles of today.
The hunger strikers are not alone!

Lettera ai compagni di Presxs a la kalle

Riflessioni di Gabriel Pombo Da Silva sull'affinità, l'informalità e la lotta di noi che siamo contro l'autorità (sia dentro che fuori).

Nota di Presxs a la kalle - Nostro malgrado dobbiamo comunicare che, non potendo assicurare l'uscita di un numero della nostra pubblicazione per la settimana internazionale di solidarietà (dal 20 dicembre al 1 di gennaio), abbiamo deciso di pubblicare/diffondere le riflessioni del compagno Gabriel Pombo Da Silva, prigioniero in Germania, prima che esca un nuovo numero.

Salutiamo il compagno e le sue riflessioni, ovviamente senza idealizzarlo ma avendone stima come uno che non si lascia piegare. Qui, il compagno riflette attorno alla modalità dello sciopero della fame come lotta, sull'affinità, sull'informalità e sull'agire di noi che siamo contro l'autorità.

Nonostante la polizia/stampa lo cataloghi come l'ideologo dell'insurrezionalismo e di alcune organizzazioni, da qui noi sappiamo che tutti contribuiamo con i nostri propri percorsi e riflessioni all'insurrezione, è in questa maniera che tra tutti costruiremo i percorsi di attacchi al capitale.

p.s. ai continui e attenti cyber-vigilantes: non sforzatevi cercando legami e reti internazionali, non c'è bisogno di conoscersi per provare l'affinità, il bisogno di collaborare, apportare, contribuire, salutare i diversi compagni o pubblicazioni è proprio di noi che ci affratelliamo nella lotta. La nostra vita non si basa né acquisisce senso con il salario a fine mese, ma con le convinzioni.

Lettera ai compagni di Presxs a la kalle

Cari compagni,

è mia intenzione quella di contribuire con queste righe al prossimo numero di Presxs a la kalle che uscirà durante le giornate di lotta internazionale (dal 20 dicembre al 1 gennaio) in ricordo/omaggio ai compagni caduti in combattimento contro lo Stato/Capitale, le sue Carceri ed i suoi Carcerieri, ed il suo Sistema/Società Carceraria... In particolare, è fresca la memoria della morte in azione di Mauricio Morales e di Zoe... senza dimenticare l'assassinio della Brigatista Diana nell'infame dipartimento d'isolamento italiano appena due mesi fa... Anche se è stata lei (in un ultimo disperato atto per conservare la sua identità e la sua dignità politica) che s'è messa il cappio sul collo (e probabilmente siamo molti tra noi antiautoritari a non condividere il suo progetto politico), noi non abbiamo dubbi che qualsiasi morte in prigione è un delitto di stato e che la finalità del sistema carcerario (specialmente i regimi d'isolamento) è la distruzione della nostra personalità in tutti i suoi aspetti (sociali, politici, umani, ecc.) e il cosiddetto "reinserimento" che dicono di perseguire non è altro che: tradimento, pentimento e vergogna...

Sono più di 25 anni di carcere che porto sulle mie spalle (dei quali oltre 20 in isolamento) e non lo scrivo con "orgoglio" (che orgoglio si può avere ad essere prigioniero?) né con "tristezza", è semplicemente una parte della mia storia personale.

In questi 25 anni di carcere non mi sono limitato a "scontare la mia condanna", ma a potenziarmi come individuo rivoluzionario e cosciente (da una prospettiva antiautoritaria) "divorando" letteralmente centinaia (o migliaia) di libri di storia, politica, filosofia, ecc...

Oltre quest'occupazione (che è anche una passione necessaria per ossigenare il cervello ed ampliare le conoscenze, pratiche e teoriche) e quella di scrivere (lettere, testi, poesie, libri... ), mi sono dedicato a lottare nel mio contesto assieme al resto dei detenuti: scioperi della fame, proteste, sommosse, ecc...

Per me è difficile accettare concettualizzazioni teoriche nella prassi di guerra contro il dominio ed i suoi molteplici sistemi e appendici... Con questo voglio dire che detesto gli aggettivi e la logorrea "politica" che inevitabilmente tutti noi mettiamo per segnalare-riassumere-sintetizzare ciò che diciamo di essere...

Penso che ciò che ciascuno di noi è va ben oltre le nostre rispettive idee o azioni. E' l'intera traiettoria della vita di un individuo quella che ci dice se questo o quella sono un fratello, un affine o meno...

Per me il concetto "affine" va ben più in là di quello teorizzato dal compagno Bonanno (e, prima di tale compagno, dai gruppi di agitazione armata anticapitalista come i C.C.A.A. nella penisola iberica, i G.A.R.I. da un lato all'altro dei Pirenei o la FAI prima della Rivoluzione/Guerra Civile spagnola e la recente F.A.I.-informale...)... e tanti altri nel corso della storia fino ad oggi...

Non ha minor importanza l'affinità non politica che s'instaura tra individui ribelli (apolitici) che, senza condividere le nostre idee (politiche), possono servire per realizzare azioni d'importanza vitale in maniera reciproca...E' un fatto che nel corso della nostra vita non sempre siamo circondati da compagni che condividono le nostre idee o progetti e, in tal senso, dobbiamo trovare complici attorno a noi e nel contesto in cui viviamo per sopravvivere e cercare vie d'uscita che permettano di spezzare il ristagno e/o l'isolamento in cui possiamo trovarci in tali periodi.

Penso, ad esempio, a situazioni/circostanze in cui abbiano bisogno del "vile metallo" per autofinanziarci e non troviamo compagni disposti ad effettuare l'esproprio (non sarebbe la prima volta) e possiamo realizzare tale azione con una di queste "affinità". O penso a circostanze come quelle che vivo oggi in questo paese, in cui "partendo da quel che c'è" cerco di accompagnare lotte (sempre con lo scopo di radicalizzarle) che, in principio, sono di carattere "legalitario" ("diritti umani"), ma che possono essere l'inizio di qualcosa che è sempre meglio di nulla.

In tal senso ricordo gli scioperi della fame solidali con l'associazione tedesca Iv.i, gli ergastolani italiani, ecc... che purtroppo non hanno dato i frutti sperati, ma non per questo non s'è cercato di andare oltre il carattere legalitario da parte di noi compagni antiautoritari che abbiamo preso parte a quelle iniziative in maniera simbolica.

Tutti noi sappiamo che "l'ideale" è camminare con compagni che vedano le cose come noi, ma sappiamo che le realtà variano da un contesto all'altro e le nostre idee devono adeguarsi proprio al contesto in cui ci troviamo.

Per esempio, in Germania sia i prigionieri politici che quelli sociali non vedono lo sciopero della fame come un'arma di lotta, il che per me è incredibile perché nella penisola iberica è parte integrante dell'arsenale di ogni ribelle e rivoluzionario, quale che sia la sua "tendenza". In Italia la situazione è simile a quella tedesca. Non solo non viene considerato come arma strategica, ma viene duramente criticato in quanto considerato "autolesionista" e tante altre stupidaggini.

Le mie esperienze di lotta mi confermano che gli scioperi della fame, quando vengono seguiti collettivamente, generano legami di affinità e di coscientizzazione che vanno ben oltre le masturbazioni teoriche. Quando "digiuniamo" assieme stiamo dicendo ai nostri carcerieri che, sebbene in tali circostanze di merda in cui abbiamo a disposizione solo i nostri corpi e le nostre idee (ossia la dignità), siamo capaci di esprimere il nostro amore e la nostra rabbia.

Lo sciopero della fame viene considerato, dall'istituzione carceraria, come un atto di ribellione che a sua volta viene sanzionato come un atto di "cattiva" condotta, come ben sanno i compagni... E' curioso, quindi, che le "critiche" ci piovano addosso da parte di certi compagni...

Continuando con il discorso sull'organizzazione informale e l'affinità, penso senza esitare che si tratti della miglior forma e mezzo per svilupparci e per lottare sia a livello individuale che collettivo.

Quando dico "svilupparci", mi riferisco al senso più esteso della parola: svilupparci teoricamente (nella misura in cui condividiamo letture e "aggiustiamo" tra di noi il senso e il valore che diamo ai diversi concetti che si mischiano a livello teorico); svilupparci nella prassi (intendendo per prassi l'insieme delle attività che viviamo nella lotta e nel quotidiano); svilupparci come individui (non come singolarità che disprezzano il collettivo) con aspirazioni di crescita quantitativa e qualitativa; sia a livello teorico che organizzativo; sia nella azioni dirette che nella propaganda che dev'essere qualcosa in più della "autoreferenzialità".

Personalmente, non mi considero un "antisociale" (forse, in tal senso, non comprendo il valore che voi in Cile date al concetto "Sociale" e/o "Anti-sociale"), bensì un Anti-sistema (intendendo per Sistema l'insieme delle Istituzioni che configurano e riproducono autoritarismo e competitività tra le persone, oltre la violenza e il terrore come fanno le dittature capitaliste o le nomenclature d'ogni tipo) che tuttavia aspira ad una proiezione di carattere Sociale in cui gli individui possano vivere liberi (sia in collettività o in maniera comunista anarchica) ed essere orientati (non "educati") in libertà.

Ma certo...prima di teorizzare o sognare su quel che dovrebbe essere "la società futura" abbiamo il grandissimo compito di attaccare e di distruggere l'attuale sistema che non solo impedisce qualsiasi "utopia", ma che sta provocando la precipitazione devastatrice ed irreversibile del Pianeta, della Natura e di tutta la Biodiversità... Inoltre, penso che l'organizzazione informale debba essere una federazione... Credo che la F.A.I. (informale) si sia espressa in maniera estesa sul perché Federazione, perché Anarchica e perché Informale.

Mi consta che la mia presa di posizione "pubblica" (per mezzo di lettere, comunicati, ecc.) sulla F.A.I. (informale) abbia generato "disagi" tra molti compagni anarchici e che, naturalmente, io sia stato direttamente collegato a tale organizzazione. Da parte mia non penso proprio di "difendermi" da accuse sbirresche né di ritrattare davanti a qualsiasi movimento le mie idee e opinioni.

Forse non c'è bisogno d'una "sigla" specifica ed è "auspicabile" un progetto organizzativo insurrezionale in cui i gruppi d'azione si esprimano da se stessi in maniera "diffusa", ma ho la sensazione che molte azioni possano essere facilmente negate o recuperate dal sistema (per non parlare della gente "non politicizzata" che non capirà né le nostre idee né le azioni)... Non so...

Infine, desidero esprimere a tutti voi, in Cile come in Argentina, l'enorme affetto e complicità, vicinanza e solidarietà che provo verso di voi e le "vostre" lotte che sento così mie come le mie idee d'azione e di libertà... Speriamo che nella vecchia Europa alcuni apprenderanno dalla vostra vitalità e dal vostro slancio!

Con queste righe vi lascio piccole riflessioni su alcune questioni...
